Building Services 2

Building Services 2 (QSB2714)

I am having this module in my 3rd semester is because I passed my Building Services 1(prerequisite module) in my previous semester. Mr. Kam Kenn Jhun is the lecturer of this module who is willing to help us out when we encountered any problems during our study. He is also an dedicated and funny guy who makes the lecture class more interesting and less complicated. This subject is about services that are usually provided in a building, which are heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system; fire protection system; vertical transportation system; and electricity supply system.

Mr. Kam also provided us some pictures and illustrations of how those services work in a building during his tutorial class so that we can have a clearer picture in our mind. Besides that, Mr. Kam will provide us some tutorial questions that are related to the topics he has taught us during his tutorial class so that we can sharpen our thinking and problem solving skills, which fulfill the requirement of TGC.

Same like the other modules, we are asked to form a group of 5 to 6 members in a group in order to complete our assignment. This assignment is distributed into two parts, which one of it is we are required to do a report and the other one is we need to have a presentation session of our report after we have submit it.

For our report, we are required to select a building as a case study, after that we need to discuss the existing types of system inside the building, then we need to identify the problems, compare and contrast the current system with our recommendation and solution. My group has chosen "Subang Parade Shopping Mall" to do our case study. We managed to collect a lot of information from Mr. Radzi and Mr. Rahman (the person who guide us when we visit to Subang Parade) so we are able to finish our assignment on time.

We were having so much fun and have gained a lot of experiences while visit to Subang Parade. Through this assignment, we not only increased our knowledge but also improved our communication skills. We also able to understand team dynamics and mobilise the power of teams. Without the aid of teamwork, we will not able to complete our assignment.

Management Science

Management Science (QSB2414)

Due to it's not a prerequisite subject, it is a new thing for me because i am not having this subject before in my previous semester. But for the lecturer of this subject, I am quiet familiar with one of the lecturer, Miss Mariatul Liza Meor Gheda who was teaching us Building Services 1 in our 2nd semester and the other one, Miss Azrina Binti Md Yaakob is a new face for me. Miss Mariatul will be in charge of our tutorial session while Miss Azrina will be in charge of our lecture session.

The topic that Miss Mariatul and Miss Azrina have covered are managerial competencies; business strategy; decision making; organizational culture, structure and design; organizational change and learning; work motivation; leadership; team and working groups; communication; HR management; time management; and info management. To ensure that we understand their teaching, our lecture sometimes will give us some short presentation or scenario acting during our lecture or tutorial. By now, I am able to define the operation of different types of organisations in the construction industry and formulate my own management potential.

For this subject, we are asked to form a group of 5 to 6 members in a group in order to complete our assignment. We are asked to prepare a report and a quality video that are related to the topics we have learned. Each of the group is doing different topic, my group is doing the "Communication" topic after we have a lucky draw session in our lecture class. We are having so much fun while we are filming the video and doing the report not to mention the knowledge we have gained.

Construction Technology 2

Construction Technology 2 (QSB1524)

I am having this module in my 3rd semester is because as I mentioned in my post before I am repeating Construction Technology 1 (which is a prerequisite module)  in my 2nd semester and apparently I have passed my Construction Technology 1. Mr. Chiew Seng Khoon who has many experiences in teaching this module is the lecturer for this module. Mr. Chiew is an dedicated lecturer who is willing to help us out all the time, we gained a lot of extra knowledge during his lecture.

The topics that Mr. Chiew has covered are basement excavation and construction; pile foundation; scaffolding; trench shoring; partitions; suspended ceiling; portal frame buildings; precast concrete products and structural steelworks frame. Upon successful of this module, i am able to interpret the logical sequences of concepts and alternative construction practices, demonstrating the variation in material applications. Besides that i am able to apply current legislation and standard with particular attention to safety and correct use of materials.

Unlike Construction Technology 1, we are not having any site visit this semester instead we are assigned to produce an individual assignment and a group assignment. For the individual assignment, we are asked to sketch/draw 20 pieces of drawings that are related to our module. For the group assignment, we are asked to form a group of 5 members in a group write a report on any one topic related to the module syllabus. We have chosen "Scaffolding" as our topic for our group assignment. We have done our group assignment by doing some research and finding information that are related to it as much as we can.

Measurement 3

Measurement 3 (QSB2115)

Mr. Soon Lam Tatt is the lecturer of this subject for us in our semester 3. Basically, this subject is for us to learn the principles, purpose and function of Standard Method of Measurement (SMM2) including measurement principles, descriptions and standard phraseology. The topics that our lecturer has covered are the measurement of for doors, windows, roof trusses, roof finishes, roof drainage, structural steel works and metal works. We are also learning the introduction on the principle of specification writing, form of specification writing and their uses for the various trades.

We are assigned to form a group of 4 to 5 members in a group and each of us is requested to produce the measurement for a door and a window. For this semester, the floor plans and the details for doors and windows are not given by our lecturer, instead we need to provided them by ourself. So, we decided to visit one of our group member's house and collect the information of different type of doors and windows in order to start our assignment. Luckily, we managed to find 5 different types doors and windows. From this assignment, I had realized the importance of teamwork which I can't finish my assignment with satisfaction if without my group members. Last but not least, we are indeed gained lots of knowledge and fun during our works.
