Construction Technology 1

Construction technology 1

Mr.Chai Voon Chiet is the lecturer for this subject. Mr. Chai is a  qualified engineer and a dedicated lecturer. This subject are quiet hard for me to understand it because it has many new words in it and quiet fresh for me. But it is an important subject to a quantity surveyor because as a quantity surveyor, we need to understand the construction system of a building then only we can figure out what we need to calculate. In order to understand it, I need to learn it by hard.
Construction technology has covered building system, structural system, enclosure system, and mechanical system. I have also learned the type of construction for residential building, such as load bearing or framed construction; components of building, such as slab, beam, column, trusses, frames and walls, arches and vaults, structural units, foundations; the function, performance and environmental impact of buildings. The topics that have been covered by Mr. Chai are foundations, site and temporary of works, concrete framed building, roofs, walls, windows and doors, and staircase. Mr. Chai also do gave us a group assignment about the background, the type of structure and main materials used, Industrialized Building
System (IBS) implemented and discuss on how IBS helped the construction of a specific building. My group was doing the Singapore Gold Sand Marina Bay Hotel. During this group project, i can get some idea about what is the work for IBS and how IBS helped the construction of the building.  Mr. Chai also shared some video clips that related to the subject during our tutorial so that we can get more clearer picture how is the construction of a building look like. Beside that, we have done some sketching that provided by Mr. Chai. Upon successful of this subject, I am able to explain the construction of buildings and the scientific principles which underpin the design and construction; explain the principles and practices of construction technology in residential buildings and to work generally of a more complex nature; describe the definition of appropriate functional requirements; appraise implementation of erection.

Introduction to law

Introduction to Law

At first, I am wondering why am I need to study law even if I want to be a quantity surveyor. But now, I realised that I need to study law to protect myself when I am entering to a contract and to protect my own reputation. The lecturer for this subject is miss Shoba, who is a qualified lawyer.

Law is a system of rules and regulations to govern the conduct and behaviour of society. Law is important because it maintains order of society and avoids chaos. We are taught by miss Shoba about Malaysian Legal System, Contract Law and Tort. Miss Shoba has taught us categories of Malaysian law, Sources of Malaysian law, Content of law, separation of powers, parliament, how laws are made, Malaysian court system. About the contract law, I have learned that a contract is a document containing terms and conditions that have been agreed between the parties which is enforceable by law. Contracts are governed by the Contract Act 1950 and common law. Usually, contract must be in writing form, if it is in oral agreements, it will be difficult to prove. Under the contract law, I have learned limitation of contract, privity of contract, offer, termination, revocation of the offer, acceptance of the offer, intention to create legal relations, domestic arrangements, consideration, certainty, consent, discharge of contracts, capacity and remedies for breach of contract. For tort, it basically is a wrong, it is an act or omission against another which is not allowed by law. Tort is governed by common law or case law. I have learned negligence,  nuisance, intentional tort, vicarious liability, occupier's liability, defamation and professional negligence. Basically, contract law and tort are aim to protect ourself as a quantity surveyor to be sued by another person and to let us know what is our right and what we should do and what we shouldn't. At last, I am glad that i have learned law this subject so that i am able to protect myself in my future work.

Building Materials

Building Materials

Building materials is an quiet interesting yet complicated subject for me. We are taught by Puan Hasmanira Mokhtar and Mr. Teh to understand the physical and chemical properties of a wide range of building materials. The topics that my lecturers have covered are concrete, metal, rubber, ceramic, paint, bricks, stones, plastic, glass and timber. Now, I am able to explain the use, physical and chemical properties of the various types of building materials that had been covered by my lecturers. Besides that, I am able to summarise the effect of building materials on construction and structural qualities. More than that, I also able to analyse problems associated with different materials used. During this module, both of my lecturers have gave us group assignment. The assignment that my group has chosen are about rubber and metal, which the assignment about rubber was given by Puan Hasmanira and the assignment about metal was given by Mr. Teh. We also do have a presentation after we finished our assignment about plastic. Puan Hasmanira has organised a factory visit for us that took us 3 days 2 nights at Johor and Melacca. The purpose of the factory visit is we need to visit 3 factories in order to let us understand the process of manufacturing glass, metal door frame and metal roofing. We have gained a lot of knowledge during the factory visit and we also explored jonker street in Melacca to find out the related building materials that have been applied in there. The factory visit not only brought us a lot of fun but we also gained a lot of knowledge which will help us in this subject.

Measurement 1

Measurement 1

Measurement 1 is a subject that teach me how to measure the quantities of the materials that will be use in constructing a building. My lecturer, Sr Ang  has provided me a book called "Standard Method of Measurement 2nd edition" (SMM 2) which provided a uniform basis for measuring building works. I am able to describe the materials which I am measuring and use the standard unit of measurement while measuring materials by referring to clauses in SMM 2. Through this subject, I have learnt how to do site clearance; measure pile cap, roof slab, apron slab, first floor slab ; measure reinforcement bars in pile cap, in beams, in columns; excavation of top soil, of trench, of pit and etc. Sr. Ang also has gave us an assignment which should be done in group. During this assignment, I have realised the important of teamwork, and the relationship between my group members and I has been bounded. When we faced some problems during our group assignment, Sr. Ang is willing to teach us with full of patience. Sr Ang also took us to a site visiting that constructing an electric substation which is near Subang Jaya. After the site visiting, we are required to do a site report about the detail of the site visit. The site visit is a fresh experience for me because it is the first time I enter to an actual site. I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience after the site visit. Although this subject is the most important for a QS, but Sr Ang also mentioned that this subject is supported by building material and construction technology too. Without the knowledge of building material and construction technology, it is hard to figure measurement 1 out.
