Construction Law

Construction Law (QSB 4414)

This module is taught by Mr. Wong Chong Wei, who is a dedicated and responsible lecturer. This module is quite similar to Professional Practice, but this module is more complicated and deeper in construction knowledge. Besides PAM form of contract, we managed to learn a lot about other contracts such as FIDIC and CIPAA.

Basically, the module provides an understanding of the principles of construction laws and its applications. By understanding the basic principle of construction law, the importance of adhering to the specific procedures and notices are emphasized. The next phase is to develop an in-depth knowledge on the application of the law and the remedies available to the parties. Subsequently, we will be able to adopt a systematic approach to analyze disputes and the respective liabilities. Lastly, this module focuses to enhance the students’ knowledge on matters involving contractual claims and its assessment.

There is 1 mid-term test, 1 seminar and 1 group assignment for this module. For the seminar, we are formed into a group of 2 to 3 students in a group and we were required to do a presentation during our tutorial session about the topic which was taught in the lecture class a week before. After that, we are required to ask questions for discussion and our classmates are required to ask at least one question to the seminar presenters.

For the group assignment, we were formed into groups to give a sound professional advice to the contractor or the employer/client who has embarked on a project and had some problems in the post contract stage. We were required to assess the application based on the condition of contract and principles of laws relating to remedies and damages due to breach of contract and/ or any other contractual issues.
