Site Surveying

Site surveying

Mr. Wong Jee Khai is the lecturer for us in this subject. He is a funny guy that makes our lecture to have more fun so that we can have better understanding of this subject and kills our sleepiness during his lecture. Without his sense of humour, this subject will bored us till die and we will end up with learning nothing because this subject is full of theories and something that we never learned or heard before in our life.

This subject is new for as this is not a pre-requisite subject, so I din't took this subject in my last semester. Actually this subject is quiet interesting and can let us prepare ourself before we get into our job as this subject explains the fundamentals of site surveying, linear survey, levelling, traversing, satellite positioning, remote sensing, mapping survey and building construction surveying which will help us in our future life. This subject will let us handle our job easily in the future, because as a quantity surveyor, we are not only doing our job in an enclosed place but sometimes we also need to go to the construction site and do some survey on it, so this subject brought a lot of advantages for us.

The requirement of this group assignments for this subject is we have to form a group that consists of 5 members in a group and make discussion about the fieldworks that we have done. There are two fieldwork for this subject, which are levelling and traversing. We are assigned two assignments for this subject because we do not have final exam for this subject, so our lecture decided to give us a mid-term test and two fieldworks in order to fulfil the requirement of the exam rules. During this two fieldwork, we have the opportunity to work with some equipments that are required for our fieldworks. In this case, we are not only able to gain some fieldwork knowledge but we also are able to gain some fieldwork experience that will help us in our future life. So, this fieldworks are killing two birds with one stone for us.

Construction Technology 1

Construction Technology 1

Unfortunately, I am repeating this subject in my semester instead of taking construction technology 2 because I failed my construction technology 1 in my previous semester, and this is a prerequisite subject so I have to pass construction technology 1 then only I can take construction technology 2. But repeating this subject doesn't mean a bad thing for me because I can learn more and able to have a clearer picture in my mind. Mr. Leong Boon Tik is the lecturer for this subject and he is a dedicated lecturer who willing to help us to solve our problems all the times. Through this subject, I have gained a lot of new knowledge and have been told a lot of interesting facts that different from my lecturer. After I have learned something in my previous construction technology, that's mean I have some basic about this subject, so this time it is quiet easy for me to handle it.

The topic that Mr. Leong has covered include site and temporary works, foundations, concrete framed buildings, roofs, walls, doors and staircases. Upon successful of this subject, I am able to explain the construction of buildings and the scientific principles which underpin the design and construction; explain the principles and practices of construction technology in residential buildings and to work generally of a more complex nature; describe the definition of appropriate functional requirements; appraise implementation of erection.

Same like the other subject, we also asked to form a group of 5 members in a group in order to complete the group assignment. In our group assignment, we are required to do some research about the type of foundation, type of slab and type of roof of place that we are lived in. For our group assignment, we have done some research about a terrace houses that are under construction, and we have completed our group assignment with a lot of teamwork. For this subject, we also required to go for a site visit where located in Cyberjaya and write a site report after visit the site. The purpose of the site visit is to let us see the actual elements which we can't see during our lecture class and to gain some extra knowledge and experience for us to prepare ourselves before we enter our job.

Measurement 2

Measurement 2

Miss Habizah Sheikh Ilmi is the lecturer of this subject for us in our semester 2. Basically, this subject is for us to learn the principles, purpose and function of Standard Method of Measurement (SMM2) including measurement principles, descriptions and standard phraseology. The topics that our lecturer has covered are the measurement of brickwork of
internal and external walls, timber floors and stud partitions, staircase structure and staircase balustradings; floor, wall, ceiling and staircase finishes including painting.

During her lecture, she has taught us how to take-off quantities from drawings, how to produce measurement, and how to competently carry out the preparation of the Bills of Quantities for brickworks, stud partitions, staircase structure, staircase finishes and balustrading, floor, wall and ceiling finishes and precast concrete piling. Also, she always remind us don't be surprise that measurement 2 is more difficult than measurement 1, and the description for the elements in measurement 2 is way longer than the description for elements in measurement 1. In order to take measurement 3 next semester, I should work more harder, so that I can pass my measurement 2 and continue my degree with measurement 3.

For the group assignment of this subject, we are asked to form a group of 5 members in a group. For my group, we need to produce measurement for internal and external walls, internal and external walls finishes, internal and external floor finishes, and internal and external ceiling finishes of the corner lot of a terrace house. I am measuring the external wall finishes and the ceiling finishes in this group assignment. From this group assignment, I am not only gained a lot of knowledge but I also realised the importance of teamwork, I can't finish the group assignment without my group member.

Building Services 1

Building Services 1

Building service considered a new subject for me in my semester 2, and I must pass this subject to continue Building services 2 in my next semester. Miss Mariatul Liza Bt Meor Gheda. This subject is about services that are usually provided in a building, which are ventilation system, telecommunication services, storm water management cold and hot water supply, and sewerage disposal and treatment. We also have Illustrate services construction in schematic diagrams during our lecture so that we can have more clearer picture in our mind how the services work in a building. Before this, I have no idea how the installation process of those services work, but now I finally have some ideas how the installation process work in a building. By now, I am able to distinguish and differentiate the installation of various types of services in a building.

During the week that we were learning storm water management this topic, our lecturer, Miss Mariatul Liza has brought us to visit the SMART tunnel in Malaysia so that we can have better understanding about the management process of storm water in our country. Basically, SMART stands for  Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel. It is to solve the problem of flash floods in Kuala Lumpur and also to reduce traffic jams along Jalan Sungai Besi and Loke Yew flyover at Pudu during rush hour. The SMART is the  first dual-purpose tunnel in the world, so we should appreciate it and be proud of our our country.

For the assignment of this subject, we are asked to form a group of five members in a group in order to complete our group assignment. The topic of my group assignment is " The integration of communications networks in the intelligent building". For this group assignment, we need to prepare a multimedia presentation so that the other groups which were doing another topic can have the opportunity to have the knowledge of the topic that our group has covered.

Mr.Chai Voon Chiet is the lecturer for this subject. Mr. Chai is a  qualified engineer and a dedicated lecturer. This subject are quiet hard for me to understand it because it has many new words in it and quiet fresh for me. But it is an important subject to a quantity surveyor because as a quantity surveyor, we need to understand the construction system of a building then only we can figure out what we need to calculate. In order to understand it, I need to learn it by hard.
Construction technology has covered building system, structural system, enclosure system, and mechanical system. I have also learned the type of construction for residential building, such as load bearing or framed construction; components of building, such as slab, beam, column, trusses, frames and walls, arches and vaults, structural units, foundations; the function, performance and environmental impact of buildings. The topics that have been covered by Mr. Chai are foundations, site and temporary of works, concrete framed building, roofs, walls, windows and doors, and staircase. Mr. Chai also do gave us a group assignment about the background, the type of structure and main materials used, Industrialized Building
System (IBS) implemented and discuss on how IBS helped the construction of a specific building. My group was doing the Singapore Gold Sand Marina Bay Hotel. During this group project, i can get some idea about what is the work for IBS and how IBS helped the construction of the building.  Mr. Chai also shared some video clips that related to the subject during our tutorial so that we can get more clearer picture how is the construction of a building look like. Beside that, we have done some sketching that provided by Mr. Chai. Upon successful of this subject, I am able to explain the construction of buildings and the scientific principles which underpin the design and construction; explain the principles and practices of construction technology in residential buildings and to work generally of a more complex nature; describe the definition of appropriate functional requirements; appraise implementation of erection.

Introduction to law

Introduction to Law

At first, I am wondering why am I need to study law even if I want to be a quantity surveyor. But now, I realised that I need to study law to protect myself when I am entering to a contract and to protect my own reputation. The lecturer for this subject is miss Shoba, who is a qualified lawyer.

Law is a system of rules and regulations to govern the conduct and behaviour of society. Law is important because it maintains order of society and avoids chaos. We are taught by miss Shoba about Malaysian Legal System, Contract Law and Tort. Miss Shoba has taught us categories of Malaysian law, Sources of Malaysian law, Content of law, separation of powers, parliament, how laws are made, Malaysian court system. About the contract law, I have learned that a contract is a document containing terms and conditions that have been agreed between the parties which is enforceable by law. Contracts are governed by the Contract Act 1950 and common law. Usually, contract must be in writing form, if it is in oral agreements, it will be difficult to prove. Under the contract law, I have learned limitation of contract, privity of contract, offer, termination, revocation of the offer, acceptance of the offer, intention to create legal relations, domestic arrangements, consideration, certainty, consent, discharge of contracts, capacity and remedies for breach of contract. For tort, it basically is a wrong, it is an act or omission against another which is not allowed by law. Tort is governed by common law or case law. I have learned negligence,  nuisance, intentional tort, vicarious liability, occupier's liability, defamation and professional negligence. Basically, contract law and tort are aim to protect ourself as a quantity surveyor to be sued by another person and to let us know what is our right and what we should do and what we shouldn't. At last, I am glad that i have learned law this subject so that i am able to protect myself in my future work.

Building Materials

Building Materials

Building materials is an quiet interesting yet complicated subject for me. We are taught by Puan Hasmanira Mokhtar and Mr. Teh to understand the physical and chemical properties of a wide range of building materials. The topics that my lecturers have covered are concrete, metal, rubber, ceramic, paint, bricks, stones, plastic, glass and timber. Now, I am able to explain the use, physical and chemical properties of the various types of building materials that had been covered by my lecturers. Besides that, I am able to summarise the effect of building materials on construction and structural qualities. More than that, I also able to analyse problems associated with different materials used. During this module, both of my lecturers have gave us group assignment. The assignment that my group has chosen are about rubber and metal, which the assignment about rubber was given by Puan Hasmanira and the assignment about metal was given by Mr. Teh. We also do have a presentation after we finished our assignment about plastic. Puan Hasmanira has organised a factory visit for us that took us 3 days 2 nights at Johor and Melacca. The purpose of the factory visit is we need to visit 3 factories in order to let us understand the process of manufacturing glass, metal door frame and metal roofing. We have gained a lot of knowledge during the factory visit and we also explored jonker street in Melacca to find out the related building materials that have been applied in there. The factory visit not only brought us a lot of fun but we also gained a lot of knowledge which will help us in this subject.

Measurement 1

Measurement 1

Measurement 1 is a subject that teach me how to measure the quantities of the materials that will be use in constructing a building. My lecturer, Sr Ang  has provided me a book called "Standard Method of Measurement 2nd edition" (SMM 2) which provided a uniform basis for measuring building works. I am able to describe the materials which I am measuring and use the standard unit of measurement while measuring materials by referring to clauses in SMM 2. Through this subject, I have learnt how to do site clearance; measure pile cap, roof slab, apron slab, first floor slab ; measure reinforcement bars in pile cap, in beams, in columns; excavation of top soil, of trench, of pit and etc. Sr. Ang also has gave us an assignment which should be done in group. During this assignment, I have realised the important of teamwork, and the relationship between my group members and I has been bounded. When we faced some problems during our group assignment, Sr. Ang is willing to teach us with full of patience. Sr Ang also took us to a site visiting that constructing an electric substation which is near Subang Jaya. After the site visiting, we are required to do a site report about the detail of the site visit. The site visit is a fresh experience for me because it is the first time I enter to an actual site. I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience after the site visit. Although this subject is the most important for a QS, but Sr Ang also mentioned that this subject is supported by building material and construction technology too. Without the knowledge of building material and construction technology, it is hard to figure measurement 1 out.
